Cigarette Packet Tank

Someone recently asked me (Godfrey Eland, owner of "Puffer") if I could remember the little tanks that could be made from a cigarette packet. Yes, I did remember and it got me thinking. The ones that I recall were made from either Woodbine or Senior Service cigarette packets although other brands could be used. My Grannie Fletcher used to smoke Woodbine cigarettes so I always had a ready supply of Woodbine packets if I needed them.
One of my hobbies is collecting cigarette lighters. I have quite a few boxes stored in a cupboard containing lighters, ashtrays and lots of other smoking memorabilia from years ago. Searching through them I came across some cigarette packets and a Cigarette Packet Tank that I had made (pictured left).

The tank shown was made out of a 10s Woodbine cigarette packet. Construction was easy requiring no special tools, just a pair or scissors. You could make the gun barrel out of the silver paper from the inside of the pack which was just rolled up. I always prefered to use a matchstick as it was less prone to bend and easier to insert.

Seeing the Woodbine Tank again brought back some good memories. I wonder if anyone can remember making these little tanks or anything else out of cigarette packets. If you can remember making other items out of cigarette packets, I would be pleased if you could share your memories, information or any photographs you may have.

I could do a webpage showing the construction details of the Cigarette Packet Tank if there is any interest shown. Just let me know and I'll see what I can do.

Brilliant! As a child we had toys but they were expensive and you were careful what you did with them. These Woodbine tanks were a favourite of mine. I would pressure my parents to hurry up and empty their cigarette packets as quickly as possible. The kids in our street would make perhaps 20 or so and then with 10 on each side start a tank battle using small pebbles as tank shells. Every time you hit an opponents tank with your pebble everything stopped while the child who was umpire had the exciting role of setting fire to the match masquerading as the gun barrel. Before long the pavement would be a mass of blazing woodbine tanks. Every now and then an adult would come out with a bowl of water to put the fires out and ruin our fun!
