Making Cigarette Packet Dogs seems to be dying out with each passing year. I have not personally seen anyone making them since the late 1950s, although I am sure there must still be a few people practicing the craft out there somewhere.

Over the years I have seen many Cigarette Packet Dogs and none of them have been exactly the same. The basic method of joining the strips together is the same but the design of the dogs does vary slightly from person to person. Some have longer/shorter legs, tail, neck, body and some add separate ears. This gives each dog a character of its own.

Something I have never seen before is the addition of rockers to the base of the dog. Unfortunately over time they have sagged a bit. Possibly varnishing would have prevented this happening and make it more durable when being played with.

Brian has been good enough to send me a number of photographs showing different designs, sizes and materials used in making his dogs. He has also been very helpful with construction information which I hope to include on this website in the near future.
The following pictures are a selection of dogs that Brian has made. I am sure you will get some good ideas from them for making your own dogs.

"Thanks" Brian for the photos and information.

The large dog is made from milk cartons. I think the smaller dog is about 14" long so the larger dog must be over 2ft in length.

Colin has been making Cigarette Packet Dogs for over 35yrs. Over this time he has made many hundreds and given them all away to friends and charities.

His main object now is to prevent this cardboard dog from becoming extinct. He has produced an instruction booklet with some useful information in it which will be shared here when time permits.

"Thank You" Colin for your contribution.

What a brilliant idea to make them from inner tubes. They are durable, waterproof (so can go in the bath) and a great way to recycle inner tubes. Final size depends on the size of the rubber inner tube.

Doing what all dogs do!!! This was actually a mistake but it still looks good. Would look great propped up against a table tamp or something similar.

"Thank You" to all those who have contributed to this website by sending me pictures, information and sharing your memories. I hope visitors to this website find something of interest which will inspire you to have a go at making a Cigarette Packet Dog.
If you have any pictures of your own that you would like adding to this page, please send them to me at kamiorijo@gmail.com with as much information as possible, eg: Who made it?,  What is it made from?, Where was it made?, When was it made?, and the measurements of it.

It is also interesting to know a bit about the maker or how you came by it or even any memories you have of Cigarette Packet Dogs. The more information that is given, the more interesting the website will be for yourself and others.

This is SO cool... I'm 55 and remember back in the early 1970's in Regina Sk Canada, some guy made a whole bunch of these cigarette package dogs, he wanted to sell me one but I didn't have the money. Whatever cigarette packs were black and white, that's the dog he made with them. WAY COOL to see these again! Thanks!

How much would one of these dogs cost to buy

John said...

Hi Bluegirl, Cigarette Packet Dogs are becoming rarer and rarer and you don't often see them for sale. Occasionally they turn up on eBay so you could check there or do a web search to see if that brings up the information you require.
Regards John
